SPOILERS: Detective Comics Annual #1

I mean... it's the origin story.

The Spoilers:

So, I'll be upfront. Between my jobs and then stuff like Monster Hunter World, didn't have a lot of time to read comics before today. Then on top of this, it's an orgin story to a character whose origin I already knew, whose present day tweaks and changes had already been hinted at enough for me to get, and on top of all of that, it's long. Yeah... I sort of glazed over this after about halfway through.

It's Clayface! He's an actor. He has an accident. Some sketchy people and sketchy chemicals get involved. Batman stops him. He wants the chemicals even more, and then he turns into the big old Clayface we know. Monster metaphors!

The Opinion:

Like I already hinted at, I didn't need a long reminder of Clayface's origin. I get why it's happening, after all, it was my indication that "hey something is probably going to happen to Clayface" when I saw it solicited, but whatever. The one thing I did take out of this is that Clayface's plea for forgiveness becomes a little less sympathetic and the Victim Syndicate's logic is a little more stretched.

First, it was made to seem like Glory became Mudface due to collateral damage due to Clayface and Batman's fight. No... Clayface shows up. She's standing there. He just straight up pours chemicals on her. The build up of Clayface being sympathetic and seeking forgiveness really took a hit for me there. That also brings me back to the Victim Syndicate, who blame Batman for all their shit... I mean suuuuuuure. You could see that if you stretch it? But Clayface pretty directly attacked Glory. You want to blame Batman is the cause of it? Sure, but there are holes there.

Eddy Barrows drew the whole issue. He draws a great Clayface. He gives people creepy beady eyes sometimes though...

  1. I like that it's a bit of a remix of "Feat of Clay" from BTAS.
