Batman Group July 2018 Solicitations

The wedding happens, Catwoman gets a new book, and a few minor things. Given the Batgirl solicit, it seems like Marighread Scott and Paul Pelletier are taking over that series. Now that the Bat books have a head editor again, I'd be curious to see how they look say six months from now. That said... I don't know what there would be to chagne. Figure we'll get the Detective team that'll take us to #1000... but is Red Hood even a Batbook? Cus the fucking Bizarro storyline is still going on, over a year later. Nightwing just got a new team and Batgirl seems to be getting one. No one really seems to talk about Batwoman and Birds is gone now... I don't know, something just seems to be missing from the Bat line up and I can't tell what.

Jason Fabok reportedly Illustrating Geoff Johns' Three Jokers story.

In other news, whenever Tom King or Scott Snyder was asked about the three Jokers reveal, they always answered it was a Geoff Johns thing... well now it's a Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok thing, as newly minted Bat editor Jamie S. Rich also announced at C2E2 that Jason Fabok would be illustrating whatever that is.

Not much else to go on, but there you go, Johns, Fabok, Joker. Should be good.

Catwoman #1 from Joelle Jones Launches in July

I'm so used to DC just reading solicitations at conventions 99% of the time, I barely pay attention anymore... yet here we are, Joelle Jones and colorist Laura Allred (Lady Killer reunion) will be launching Catwoman #1 in July, just announced at C2E2.

The first story apparently has Selina dealing with a copycat, committing crimes as Catwoman. Get it... copy cat... Catwoman?

I'm excited. Jones has become one of my favorite Catwoman artists of all time within a couple of months. It stings to lose her off the main Batman title, but a Catwoman book with a lot of potential to be really good makes up for it. Also, it was announced that Lee Weeks would be illustrating Batman #51-53, so that's a plus too.

UPDATE: Solicit and cover have been added thanks to the story at Paste Magazine.

Catwoman #1
Writer/Artist: Joëlle Jones
Colorist: Laura Allred
Variant Cover Artist: Stanley “Artgerm” Lau
The wedding night’s barely over, but Catwoman’s back on the streets, this time to expose a copycat who’s pulling heists around Gotham City. As Selina cracks the whip on her former criminal cohorts, she’s attracting unwanted attention from one of Gotham’s most dangerous groups. The mob? Nope. Try the GCPD. And as if the Bat-Bride didn’t have enough problems, don’t miss the debut of an all-new villain determined to make trouble for all nine of Selina’s lives. Don’t miss the start of an all-new monthly series written and illustrated by Eisner Award-nominee Joëlle Jones

Batman #44 Preview

This is one of those one-off sort of artsy issues... and it shows, because the art is the real star this week.

Nightwing #41 Preview

Well, here's the end of the arc... then we got two one off issues that I'm probably not even gonna bother with, then new creative team in May!

Batman Group June 2018 Solicitations

This is a weird set of solicits, because it's a known fact that there's some more news coming as early as this week. A lot of books seem to be throwing creators around just to fill in the gaps, like Batgirl has a new writer this month, but also Green Arrow does too after just having a new team on it. Seems like there's a lot of buying of time just to make things line up.

Some other stuff to look forward to... I guess pay attention to this week and WonderCon. James Tynion has said you'll find out where everyone in his Tec run ends up soon and (this isn't necesssarily related) there will be news about stuff this week. Joshua Williamson and Stjepan Sejic are doing a book together that isn't Flash. Snyder and King have both apparently talked up WonderCon. So we'll see where things land after this weekend I guess.

Also, jesus christ that fucking Bizarro story line in Red Hood is still going on.

New Detective Comics Team Announced

Literally as well as figuritively. You see here, Bryan Hill and artist Miguel Mendoca will be taking over the creative duties of Detective Comics, with a new arc called "On the Outside." Joining the book will be Black Lightning, as well as Duke Thomas, who joins series mainstay Cassand Cain... if you haven't figured it out by now, we're loosing the Gotham Knights and seemingly getting the Outsiders in return, which could be cool.

I haven't read pretty much anything by Bryan Hill, but I have seen his name pop up a lot recently, so he seems on the rise. I kind of wish DC sprung for a bigger name artist, as Mendoca's stuff here and there has been fine, but I wouldn't consider it very memorable for my tastes, but who knows... this could be his time to shine.

I don't know! I've never been a huge Outsiders guy, because by the time I got into monthlies, the Outsiders sort of... stopped being a thing. It was around RIP and I remember... was it Dan Didio who took it over and it just sort of fizzled away? That sounds right. Point is, not a whole lot of nostalgia for the team outside of their random apperences throughout the big 90s/00s books I read, but we'll see, Rebirth could change this all for me.

EDIT: Looking at the article, I missed the bit where this says it's for five issues... So another new team in August?

Tim Seeley on Bat/Cat Wedding Planning Duty

Just announced today, Tim Seeley will be at the helm for a number of one-shots through May and June, leading up to Batman and Catwoman's weddings. With the grand total of these issues coming to five, we'll see some versus match ups between the likes of Robin and his Grandfather Ra's, Nightwing vs Hush, and more.

This all happens while the current arc of Batman sees Bruce and Selina opt to elope, while the Joker decides to interfere.

Full lineup of the one shots below (all written by Seeley):
  • Robin vs. Ra's al Ghul, illustrated by Brad Walker and Drew Hennessy
  • Nightwing vs. Hush, illustrated by Travis Moore
  • Batgirl vs. Riddler, illustrated by Minkyu Jung
  • Red Hood vs. Anarky, illustrated by Javier Fernandez
  • Harley Quinn vs. Joker, illustrated by Sami Basri
So, with all the fighting going on, it's not exactly going to be the summer of love, THANK YOU! I'm out!

SPOILERS: Batman #42

By the end of this issue, I'm basically treating this as a back door pilot to a series I would like to see return and be done really well.

SPOILERS: Batman: White Knight #6

Car chases! Villains! and Nazi WWII experimental freeze weaponry! OH MY!

SPOILERS: Nightwing #40

It's weird that they call Judge the Sea Butcher on the cover, when that was some weird little detail that's still not really his name... I don't know, this arc is almost over then a month off (of issues I'm not gonna bother with) and new team incoming.

Batman Group May 2018 Solicitations

May is here! And with it, a little change, and if you read between the lines, maybe a little more come June?

We already know about the Nightwing creative team change, but with creators of other books maybe hinting they're moving elsewhere, I'd probably take note of any book in this round of solicits that has the story arc ending... here we've got Batgirl and maybe Birds of Prey well, that one's just straight up canceled, seeing concluding stories.

There's also other stuff to take note of in Gotham and the rest of the DCU. James Tynion will be wrapping up his time on Detective Comics this month, which is sad. I remember him saying he had plans to go to #1000, would have like to have seem him achieve that... but I guess that's up to Peter Tomasi now? Then there's no Titans books of any sort in May, which is probably due to No Justice, so those books might be quite a bit different in June. There's some other stuff here and there that I know I'm missing, but the summer should be pretty interesting.

Nightwing gets a New Creative Team in May

Hey! News! I'm going to guess more of this may be coming, but I don't know anything for sure... I will say that here's a part of my Nightwing review for tomorrow that I wrote this morning:
Who knows... maybe when May solicits come out, something will be up, as April just seems to be inventory issues (I'm writing this Tuesday morning, so I've yet to see, and I probably won't care enough to go back and change this once we learn what's up in May).
And god damn it, I'm still not changing it, also god damn it, I'm a wizard!

So anyways, the short story is Benjamin Percy formerly of Green Arrow and (at least as of now) currently Teen Titans, will be taking over writing with Christoper Mooneyham on art. I'm not familiar with Mooneyham, but a quick google search has me thinking "well let's see how he draws Nightwing" cus a lot of the stuff I'm seeing is very stylistically different than that of Dick Grayson, Percy on the other hand, while I had some serious issues with his New 52 stuff... which I thought was just dumb, I've really enjoyed Teen Titans and Green Arrow was pretty fucking awesome, so I'm cool with that.

Also random thing to note, apparently editor Katie Kubert is back at DC? I somehow missed that, as I assumed she was still at Marvel where she and Mike Marts landed a couple years into the New 52. Well, she's back, and part of the Bat office again apparently, as Ben Percy revealed she's editing his run of Nightwing. So that's cool. Her and Mike Marts were attached to a lot of the Batman stuff I loved prior to the New 52, so I've got high hopes!

Read more about the change at the source!

Batman #41 Preview

Just a half naked Batman punching his elderly butler, your average issue of Batman. It's no "Quiet, or  Papa spank" but it'll do.

Also, be prepared for people to be mad about Ivy! Why? I don't fucking know. I've read the issue and it seems alright. But I guess if Ivy isn't portrayed like a saint bestowed upon the earth by God, everything is terrible.

SPOILERS: Dark Knights Rising: The Wild Hunt #1

Look man... this is some Grant Morrison ass Grant Morrison shit. There's a point towards the end where Detective Chimp starts losing his cognitive thought and that's pretty much how I feel trying to explain this, so I'm going to keep this as simple as possible.

SPOILERS: Detective Comics #974

The old comic book saying is ain't no body dead until you see a body... well in this case, the body is everywhere.

Batman sure isn't happy when he doesn't get his way, that's what I've learned from this series.

SPOILERS: Nightwing #38

There comes a time in every young Nightwing writer's life where they have to do an over the top fan service scene.

DC Brings Change in the Spring

So the day most of this news broke, I was in the middle of a 14 some odd hours between my jobs and then tonight I spent most my time moving my computer from one case to another, so forgive the lateness...

BUT HEY! Things are happening at DC. You've probably heard. It all started with the news that Scott Snyder, James Tynion and Joshua Williamson will be taking over Justice League (Snyder) and some more unannounced JL family titles. It all starts with No Justice, in May (June?) and Harley and Damian are on a team together so that should be fun.

Then of course DC went full Bendis with Brian Michael Bendis. He's taking over Superman, launching with a weekly mini-series, then taking on the writing duties of both Action and Superman. His creator owned comics are coming over to DC and he's getting his own imprint... No, he's not taking over Batman like some thought he teased on twitter. Though I'll bet his imprint is basically Ultimate DC where he can have his own Batman. That said, in the same Bendis news, we got word of a new one shot called DC Nation #0, which is the predecessor of a free magazine DC will be releasing... remember when they did that already and only had like one or two issues?

Anyways, DC Nation, which was probably the FCBD issue at some point, but not anymore, will be released May 2nd, the Wednesday before FCBD, for $0.25, free on digital (can't charge less than $0.99 for some stuff.) Included in this issue, we get stuff for No Justice and Bendis' Superman run, but also a short story from Tom King, Claymann and Jordie Bellaire about Joker finding out Batman and Catwoman are getting married... Given Tom King's record, I'm preparing for a fucked up Joker. And with that news, the wedding is apparently set for #50.

Lots of new stuff. This isn't all apparently. Scott Snyder has teased more to come. Bleeding Cool is reporting that Peter Tomasi might be jumping over to Detective, with Tynion being busy with Justice League stuff, and something else possibly. I wouldn't mind that, though I would have liked to have seen Tynion get to issue #1000 like he had said he wanted to, but we'll see. Chris Wildgoose, the artist on Batgirl bounced off that book for anew DC project yet to be announced. Outgoing Green Arrow writer Benjamin Percy stated that his next book is set in a city much more suited for his "dark sensibilities" and uh... Gotham fits that? He's got experience writing Black Canary, I'd like to see his take on Birds of Prey. Ultimately, I think a good handful of DC books are due for a refresh, like Birds and Batgirl, so lets see what news comes in the upcoming weeks.
