Batman Group November 2018 Solicitations

For whatever reason, when I first read through these solicits, I found it to be a very underwhelming month. Nothing really stands out all that much.

Detective Comics #987 Preview

No really, that one panel where the editor notes the No Justice call back is it... that's all "the Braniac files" get. The whole cover dedicated to it, good lord, I laughed at that one.

Love the title of the article "In battle against Braniac." Nnnnnnnope.

SPOILERS: Batman #52

When all is said and done with this arc, Bruce is going to make a calm and rational decision, isn't he?

SPOILERS: Nightwing #47

This is one of those issues where it says exactly what I was thinking and I can't help but think "good for you book, good for you."

Batman #52 Preview

I had an idea of where this was going to go last issue, and the ending of this one just pushes me further into that direction

(Source: CBR)

Nightwing #47 Preview

I forgot to mention last issue that I think the VR look Dick's got going looks real dumb. Inoffensive, yet still real dumb.

Batman Group October 2018 Solicitations

So we got all these limited color palette covers this month for some gimmick foil thing... I guess DC liked those Metal covers or had ordered too much material! Though it makes some of the series kind of hard to tell apart by the covers. Nothing else big this month really.

DC Launches Batman: Secret Files in October

I was going to stay hush about this one until solicitations, but hey, it's on DC's site right now, so fair game by my book. Here's the solictation text:
Delve into Batman’s case histories and discover brand-new stories by some of comics’ most exciting talents. The BATMAN team of Tom King and Mikel Janin provides a framing sequence, setting up our hand-picked teams of creators to take a look at Bat-mysteries past and present. Featuring a bevy of Batman villains, including a look at how the Scarecrow’s fear toxin affects the common man, and a special story written by Tom Taylor with art by Brad Walker that  teams the Dark Knight Detective with Detective Chimp.
Further details include Tom King and Mikel Janin (which I'm going to guess is the Scarecrow story) with Jordie Bellaire on writing duties with Elena Casagrande on art. These pages can have old or wrong info, so I'll wait for some official word. Sounds like it may be on on-going anthology, I was thinking it may be a one-shot, but that solicit text makes it seem more like a thing. Nope, one-shot it is.

The Batman SDCC Round-up

So we're in the second half of SDCC, and looking at the panels I don't see many opportunities for much more news related to Batman, so here's a roundup of a bunch of stuff that got announced:
  • Hey, remember Marc Silvestri had a Batman book to announce? Me neither. But they announced it! Batman/Joker: Deadly Duo, where Batman and Joker team up for some reason... they were talking about how this never has been done or something like that and I'm just going to point out we all forgot about Batman: Europa. No release date given for this one, as is tradition.
  • Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok will release Batman: Three Jokers under the Black Label imprint as a three issue (40pg each) series, that will tie in to regular DC continuity. Considering Doomsday Clock has a big Joker story going on it (lots of Joker next week) I'm sure it won't be confusing at all!
  • Batman's old Hush costume is coming back in Batman #53, but... if you paid attention last month in solicits, that shouldn't be a surprise.
  • Scott Snyder and Jock are launching a six issue mini series about The Batman Who Laughs in November, bringing in a new Dark Knight who has a fetish for guns. It's apparently going to tie into Justice League quite a bit. Horror roots for Snyder... I thought the full Wytches series was supposed to come back at the same time?
  • After being rumored for 37 years, Peter Tomasi was confirmed to be the next long-term writer on Detective Comics. He'll be starting his run in December with artist Doug Mahnke with issue #994, and they'll be leading all the way up to #1000 in March of next year. No real details on what his run will be like.
Pretty sure I got all the relevant news. Let me know if I forgot anything.

Batman #51 Preview

I've flipped through this issue, haven't read it in full yet, but I can already tell it's going to be good.

Detective Comics #985 Preview

Well, this preview is a tad bit early. Weird. Issue doesn't come out until the Wednesday following next.

SPOILERS: Detective Comics #984

I don't know why I'm now focusing on it, but I'm just looking at the "Karma comes to Gotham!" text on the cover and I'm just really bothered by how shitty the typography is.

Detective Comics #984 Preview

Oh wow, this preview has been out there for a few days, huh? Been playing too much Dark Souls and watching too much NJPW, whoops!

SPOILERS: Nightwing #46

I have a VR headset, all Nightwing needs to do is knock over one of the tracking devices and boom, problem solved!

SPOILERS: Catwoman #1

...I just hate all the text on this cover so much, and the logo doesn't match the vibe and ugh. But hey! Despite everything that's happened this week, this book is new and it's pretty alright!

SPOILERS: Batman #50

I'm going to assume you all were good and didn't read that New York Times article on Sunday, spoiling the results for the wedding... or even the headline only, which spoils the results of the wedding... Regardless, I'm going to get straight to the point... Did Batman and Catwoman get married?

Nightwing #46 Preview

What perfect timing for that headline, haha.

Catwoman #1 Preview

Hopefully this book doesn't get overshadowed by the spoilers debacle of Batman #50. Not wild about the flat coloring style, worked for Lady Killer, not really digging it here, other than that, I was pretty happy with this issue.

Batman: Prelude to the Wedding: Harley Quinn vs. The Joker #1 Preview

Didn't see this one on any site and it wasn't in the PR email initially... seems like poor old Harley and Joker got forgotten about momentarily. Better late than never!

Detective Comics #983 Preview

I'll be honest, I had no idea what to think going into this, other than the artist's last couple of issues on Nightwing didn't exactly do it for me, but I came away from this issue pretty pleased on both fronts. Definitely check it out if you're on the edge.

Batman Group September 2018 Solicitations

Bit of a strange month. Batgirl isn't the only one with a new costume, Red Hood has got one and from the looks of it, Batman has a new (old) costume as well. Speaking of Red Hood, I feel like at a time, everyone has just said Jason Todd should be DC's Punisher, and now we've got that and... eeeeeeh. *cue that one Larry David gif* Also! Nightwing is back to double shipping for some reason, at a higher price, of course, similarly Titans is now double shipping too. James Robinson and Stephen Segovia are the latest in the Detective Comics guest arcs, and since DC doesn't seem to want to put a permanent team on that book until #1000 (March), I'm going to pick and choose what I read, much like fill-in issues. This next arc seems to have a purpose with reestablishing the Outsiders, it seems it could lead to something else... this newest solicited arc? I don't get that same feeling, but we'll see.

So yeah, weird month.

Batman #49 Preview

Without giving too much away, there's a lot of talking in this issue, and like the DC Nation #0 story, it's pretty funny in a weird situational way.

Also, just count how many shots Joker gets out of that revolver...

Sean Murphy Redesigns Batgirl

"I really like that"

::one day later::

"Oh yeah, I run a site about Batman comics..."

Well here I am! As the title says it, Sean Murphy redesigned the Batgirl costume to something more traditional, in a sense. It looks like a cross between the Batgirl: Year One costume and his own White Knight Batgirl. This change comes with storyline reasons as Barbara heads back to Gotham proper and starts using a suit she had been working on in the past.

More images of the design can be seen over at Polygon. Honestly, this may sway me a little bit towards picking the series back up... but we'll see, there's... some stuff in September worth talking about. Also, not the only costume change we're seeing!

Detective Comics #982 Preview

Haven't given this one a read yet so I'm not sure if I'll have a post about it or not given I usually pass write ups for inventory issues, we'll see. Art looks fantastic though.

Batman #48 Preview

I've got some thoughts about this issue...

Nightwing #45 Preview

It wouldn't be a Nightwing book without weird sex stuff. Just remember how the last issue ended...

First Look at Catwoman #1

Joelle Jones' Catwoman got its first look over at Nerdist, and seeing the costume in motion (along with a Artgerm variant) I'll say it's growing on me.

Also, there's a very important detail about the wedding in tomorrow's Nightwing vs Hush issue that may pertain to this series. We'll see.

Batman: Prelude to the Wedding: Robin vs. Ra's al Ghul #1 Preview (UPDATED)

Whatever CBR got/decided to do, was a hacked up post of two random pages that weren't even connected together. Having read the issue I thought "why didn't they just post the opening scene, that'd make a perfect preview" so, with the files in my inbox, that's exactly what I'm doing. Technically I have up to page 10 and well... that's excessive. You get five!

SPOILERS: Detective Comics #981

James Tynion finishes up his run on Detective, puts some toys back in the sandbox, leaves others up for debate. All in all, it was a damn good run.
