Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #1 Preview

Please be good, please be good, please be good, please be good.

Also, the book totally doesn't need the "Batgirl and the" part... there's only three of them! I feel like I'm probably going to say "It should just be called Birds of Prey" every month. Ah well.

  1. I would think you know this, but just to be sure, it's called "Batgirl and the Birds of Prey" because she's the most popular and well-known character of the trio and they're trying to get as many readers as possible. They've said in interviews that they're trying to cover the less well-known characters in books based around the more popular characters in hopes they can get them out to a wider audience and worry less about cancelling the story before it reaches it's conclusion. That's also probably why Detective Comics became a team book, because a solo Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, or Cassandra Cain book wouldn't sell as well as a book with the "Detective" name that also stars Batman.

    1. Well aware, but it's still aesthetically a shitty title. Too many words. Doesn't roll of the tongue. Implies Batgirl is above the rest of the team, which she isn't. And if Rebirth is a play to return to form, then the name is a known quantity, and putting Batgirl square in the center of the covers would accomplish the same thing.

That said, it's named the way it is for all the reasons you listed. Still a crappy name.

  2. It was very problematic that they cured Barbara of her disability.
Here is hoping that there will be a new Oracle for this team and hopefully some new members. If you want to call it "Batgirl and the Birds of Prey" then the later should have more than two members.
