Panels of the Week, 07/31/2014

Limited internet, dying battery, no time for this part!

Looking Forward: August 6th, 2014

WELCOME TO AUGUST! Well, not yet. Today's the last day of July, so savor it while it lasts. But fuuuuck, this year seems to be flying by. I think the fact that I judge the passage of time based on comic releases added to the fact that there's a weekly going on, it just seems to be moving faster for me. Oh well!

  • Grayson #2: More Dick in Spyral... Midnighter is gonna show up again, and we get more information on Helena Bertinelli.
  • Batman Eternal #18: It's Tim Seeley's week, because he returns to scripting duties for Eternal and he's bringing Killer Croc back with him.
  • Detective Comics #34: Icarus stuff! I'm writing this super far in advance, because I'm actually on vacation right now, so something about the annual too? Maybe?
That's it! I'm really looking forward to seeing Grayson continuing. So while I anticipate that next issue, you should do any online comic stuff shopping by using the affiliate banners I got up on the site! THANKS!

SPOILERS: Batman Eternal #17

Deacon Blackfire is back from the grave and he’s ready to take revenge on Gotham, while Batwing and Jim Corrigan are helpless to stop him.

SPOILERS: Harley Quinn #8

Remember all those predictions I had for this issue and what’s on Harley’s roof? Well, I was right, but boy, did I underestimate the scope of what was to come.

SPOILERS: Detective Comics Annual #3

The annual jumps back in time just before the current Icarus arc began, in order to fill in some blanks.

Detective Comics Annual #3 Preview

No idea what's going on in this preview, mainly because I haven't read it... But I am downloading it now at the blazing speed of 1.45mb/s, which is a REAL generous readout... This is what I'm living with right now, mountain internet... I saw a bear yesterday.

Batman Eternal #17 Preview

With this preview and arc in general, I'm probably going to have to read The Cult again, it's been awhile, and I remember it to be pretty good.

Batman Beyond Saturdays, 07/26/2014

This week on Batman Beyond 2.0, we get a bit of follow up to everybody's favorite feel-good story, "The Return of the Joker." Hooray!

Stack Rundown, 07/26/2014

A little late this week, sorry about that... Injustice was on sale with Playstation Plus, so for some reason I bought it again and played through the entire story last night, so I was up real late and forgot to write up the last two issues I read. Pretty good game... Cut scenes are pretty laughable though. So, COMICS!

Anarky to New-Fifty-Debut in Detective Comics

NOTE: Old picture, bro
GET IT!? New-Fifty-Debut! Because he's debuting in the New 52 and "52" sort of sounds like "fifty-debut!' HAHAHA...

God damn it, god damn it me...

FUCK! Shut it down. Someone reminded me that Anarky was in the Green Lantern Corps Zero Year issue, but I mean, if we're being honest, who remembers that? Did those Zero Year tie ins actually happen? Are we sure that wasn't one big collective dream?

Anyways, while I'm not expecting any bombshells dropped given how we've already had a shitton of DC announcements prior to SDCC, Brian Buccellato and Francis Manapul did mention at the first Batman panel that their next arc will feature Anarky. HUZZAH! Announcements, of sorts. Given they're taking two issues off, expect this story to happen in December.

Harley Quinn #8 Preview

I love this book, just so much dumb, violent fun. Best part? In two weeks we get another issue of Harley, then in another two weeks we get another issue... Why? Because I guess DC thought of double shipping the book in general, but then Conner and Palmiotti went "we can't write that fast!" So oh well, double shipping for one month is better than none.

Guillem March's Detective Comics Annual #3 Cover

Holy unsolicited cover, Batman! Yeah, when this issue was solicited, it just used an old Detective Comics cover, and I've been on the search for the real one for the last week, and here it is! Also, SURPRISE! Weather Dell'Edera someone with the last name of Fornes, will be joining Scott Hepburn on the art side of things.

And given hat this issue is supposed to introduce a character we haven't seen in the New 52 yet, chances are it's Calendar Man.

Panels of the Week, 07/24/2014

What's this? A couple surprise entries this week? Shocking!

Looking Forward: July 30th, 2014

The mythical fifth week of comics! Thanks to the weeklies and Harley Quinn doing so well that it gets multiple releases, I'll actually have something to cover next week... Although I'll be on vacation! Yep. Gonna be out of town with limited internet access, but come Wednesday, I'll find a way to get posts up eventually, just might take forever to download the new releases onto my iPad, but we'll see.
  • Batman Eternal #17: Ray Fawkes wraps up this Arkham arc with a potential appearance of the actual Spectre. That could shake things up quite a bit.
  • Harley Quinn #8: "Scatapult" is a word that is used in this solicit... Soooo, we're going to get a giant catapult that flings dog shit all over Coney Island, aren't we?
  • Detective Comics Annual #3: Apparently this takes place in the past and ties into the Icarus stuff? Also we're going to see the reintroduction of a villain not yet seen in the New 52... I think?
So yeah, might be later than usual, but posts will come at some point next Wednesday, most likely all at once! If Monday rolls around and there's still stuff like previews to be posted, I might need some people pointing them out to me on Twitter so I know where to go when I do have internet... That or any relevant news, really. But given that it's post-SDCC, I don't expect much of that. GROUP EFFORT, guys.

In the meantime, you got trades, shirts, or whatever you want to buy online? Well, why not go through the TFAW or Super Hero Stuff affiliate banners I got up on the site? Turn off adblocker and support Gotham Spoilers, it's the cool thing to do! All you got to do is click on those banners, and buy stuff within the same browsing session and blammo, you get stuff, I get support. Win/win.

SPOILERS: Batman #33

It's the finale of Zero Year, Batman vs. the Riddler, and guess what! Batman wins. Go figure! Well, it's been a long time coming, but let's put Zero Year to bed.

SPOILERS: Batman and Robin #33

You know what my favorite Batman is? The Batman that gives a big middle finger to the Justice League, and does what he wants... Safe to say, that's pretty much ALL this issue is.

SPOILERS: Batman Eternal #16

More light (metaphorically speaking) is shed on just what's happening beneath Arkham Asylum, none of it good, I wonder what could happen? the way, Arkham Manor #1 coming this fall! Heyooo!

Endgame Watch! One Character Confirmed

We know pretty much absolutely nothing about what "Endgame" is going to be once Batman #35 rolls around in October, other than the fact that it's going to be set after Batman Eternal. But late last night, Eternal writers Scott Snyder and Tim Seeley were talking on Twitter and confirmed one thing:

Julia Pennyworth is most likely going to be sticking around. I only say "most likely" because who knows, she could show up for a page in #35 and never appear again, but chances are that's not going to happen. It seems almost obvious at this point that the woman we saw in the Batcave in Batman #28 was Julia, given it's her father's old position so there's that, uh, "poetic" element to it? But just because Julia is there during the later part of Eternal doesn't mean that it's necessarily a permanent position for her. Though, with the teasers of Alfred getting locked away after some Scarecrow happenings, all bets are off. Maybe Scott Snyder will finally get his man and kill Alfred this time!

Or not. Let's not do that. If there's one character who should never really die, it's Alfred.

Batman and Robin #33 Preview

See that? Batman and Robin. Not "and Nightwing," "and Wonder Woman," "and what the fuck ever." Batman and Robin.

Also, Titus in the corner of that panel with Batman and Cyborg is hilarious. Just sitting there like "Yeah, don't touch my master, dick, I'm a dog!"

Batman #33 Preview

Phew, it has been a long time coming (over a year, now) but Zero Year is finally reaching its conclusion. I've got to say, I enjoyed the story, but I don't want anymore arcs that stretch past six issues. Six is a nice number. We've had two year-long stories from this book already... I've aged two years in the time it's taken to tell those two stories... That's nuts! No more, please.

Batman Beyond Saturdays, 07/19/2014

Welcome back to Batman Beyond 2.0 coverage! Going to try something different this time around... I used to wait to write this stuff up every two chapters, because that way I'd have a full issue to write about (aka 20 pages of content), but when I did that, I didn't like having to do full coverage on Saturdays. I like having nothing to do, go figure. So I figure I'm now just going to do short write ups and offer some thoughts on each chapter, nothing too deep, but consistent weekly coverage nonetheless.

So, let's get into the first chapter of the new "Mark of the Phantasm" story.

Stack Rundown, 07/19/2014

It was a smaller week for me, only a handful of titles outside the ones I already covered here, but there were a couple new series and a favorite of mine returned after a longer than usual gap between issues, sooooo, comics.

Panels of the Week, 07/17/2014

Oh man, I've done these posts two weeks in a row, I'M BACK, BABY... Until there's another week with only like two books and I don't like the art in one.

Looking Forward: July 23rd, 2014

Batman, Batman, BATMAN. Just one of those types of weeks coming up.
  • Batman #33: It's been a long time coming, but Zero Year finally concludes.
  • Batman Eternal #16: Harper, Red Robin, Batwing and the Joker's Daughter all... doing stuff!
  • Batman and Robin #33: Finally, this title is back to being called what it should be... Now where's Damian?
That's it for next week. San Diego Comic Con is going to be going down for the better part of next week, and given that we got a shit ton of announcements already, I wouldn't expect much past some more detail to those, and the two-month "We're moving, pardon our dust" event DC's going to put out in April/May... which couldn't sound less appealing to me at the moment. But who knows, maybe we'll get some other book announcements for November, or something.

AS ALWAYS, you got comic related business to buy online? Why not use the affiliate banners I got to the side and bottom of the page, and support Gotham Spoilers? That'd be preeeeetty cool.

SPOILERS: Robin Rises: Omega #1

Remember all that pre-New 52 Grant Morrison history and how it was sort of questionable whether it happened or not, or if it happened in the same way? Yeah, well, it happened. How? SHHHHH, don't worry about it man, all you need to know is Damian was there, now Damian is dead, but it's time to get Damian back! Maybe.

SPOILERS: Batman Eternal #15

Remember how Batwing and the Spectre('s host) are Gotham's newest buddy cop duo? Let's check on them heading into Arkham, surely nothing bad is going to hap-HAHA... they're fucked.

SPOILERS: Harley Quinn Invades Comic-Con #1

Who's ready to break down the fourth wall and see Harley Quinn photobomb Dan Didio then quite literally meet her makers? I know I am.

SPOILERS: Batwoman #33

In this latest issue of Batwoman Kate continues to track down Nocturna, go to therapy, and watch a custody battle pan out... you know, the usual Batwoman stuff at this point.

"End Game" to Jump Forward in Time

So remember how Batman #28 jumped two thirds of the way into Batman: Eternal and was like "WHOA! HEY! Look at this shit!" That's pretty much what "End Game" is going to be when we get to October, the whole arc.

In an interview with Newsarama, Snyder keeps his cards pretty close to his chest (let's see how long that lasts) but does reveal that "End Game" takes place right after the end of Batman Eternal, and will feature a handful of "wait, how did that happen?" continuity shifts. Makes sense on one hand, given that trying to keep a monthly book on pace with a weekly seems like an impossibly mad task to attempt (let's see how Catwoman pans out), but on the other hand, there's a distinct risk of sort of ruining the surprise for Eternal. I mean, spoiler alert, Batman is probably okay after that first page of Batman Eternal #1. But Snyder goes on to say that "End Game" will feature a large cast as well, so there could be lot's more spoilers to be had. It's going to be interesting to see what they do, especially given the fact that there's the whole Robin situation to be dealt with...

Other than that, Snyder gives out a couple more details about Batman #34, and reveals that the return of back-ups to Batman will see a different artist every month. Like I said above, Snyder seems to want to stay quiet about the story as a whole... but let's be honest, that dude gets excited, he'll spill some beans eventually!

These are Bat Book Covers, Look at Them!

Hey, look at this variant cover to Batman #34! Look at it! That issue is basically going to be the prelude to Arkham Manor, given by some recent interview info.

Batman Group October 2014 Solicitations

Both Gotham Academy and Arkham Manor didn't seem to make this initial reveal, but I'll update the post as soon as those come in. Let's look at what you should take note of this time around.
  • "Endgame" is your new Batman arc. No details are given, but seems like there'll be a backstory again, with James Tynion co-writing like usual. Also, expect that cover to change.
  • Batman/Superman #15 was solicited, but expect that issue to be pushed back to November (or even further)
  • Instead of doing what they did on The Flash and just get a fill-in artist, seems like the regular Detective team of Manapul and Buccellato will just be taking two issues off. In their place Ben Percy and John Paul Leon will have a two-parter story.
  • New Batgirl team and all that.
  • Apparently DC's solicitation writers can't get their shit together and have Will Pfeifer listed as writer of Red Hood, again. Expect that to be Scott Lobdell.
  • Georges Jeanty is the new artist on Batwoman.
  • New Catwoman team and all that.
  • The Harley Quinn "scent-ticular" is indeed the Harley Quinn Annual
Hit the jump for the solicits!

Batman Eternal #15 Preview

Batman? Nah, Harper Row isn't inspired by Batman, not at all. Grifter on the other hand, well that's an entirely different story.

Stack Rundown, 07/12/2014

Slim week this time around, and next month it's going to be slimmer, because I probably won't be reading two of these series anymore. More room for the more interesting books that are coming out, I guess.

So... Who Wants to Smell Harley Quinn?

So, the winner of "weirdest thing I've ever had to write about in the four plus years of Gotham Spoilers" fittingly goes to Harley Quinn.

Harley Quinn: Scenticular, or at least that's how I think it's spelled. But yeah, Scenticular, as in we're getting a project with Harley Quinn where you scratch (or, if we're taking Amanda Conner's advice, rub) and sniff...

You know, I'm literally at a loss of words for this one. I think it's a fantastically stupid idea in the best way possible, but past that, you got me. What am I supposed to say? This is fucking ridiculous, even for this book. But I love it so much.

The more I think about it, the crazier it gets. Oh god, this is insane, completely insane... Lest we forget that the next regular issue of Harley Quinn has something called "the scatapult" which I'm betting is a giant dog shit slinging catapult, so part of me actually fears what's to come in this particular outing for Harley.

First Look at Batman Eternal #15

Have you ever noticed when DC has a bunch of announcements to make, it seems like their PR people forget to send out previews? Usually we have at least a couple by now (as in Friday morning) up at places like Man Cave or Uproxx, yet nothing at the moment.

Anyways, in my Google searches for previews, I came across this sneak peak of Batman Eternal #15 on Derek Fridolf's Deviantart page. Hey look, Tim, Harper, and not trendy Babs.

Batman Eternal October 2014 Solicitations

Solicits are due to hit on Monday, but Newsarama has got the first look at October's Batman Eternal solicits with covers by Clay Mann and hey... Batgirl! That's not what you look like anymore! Oh no, continuity!!!

Some new artists join the fold as well, Javier Garron, Meghan Hetrick of Nightwing fame, Simon Coleby, and Batgirl's own Fernando Pasarin. Wonder if we're getting to the point where some of the marquee artists on this project are getting their own regulars and moving elsewhere, after all, I doubt we're going to see another issue drawn by Mikel Janin or Trevor McCarthy, which is real unfortunate. Oh well, we'll have to wait and see, I guess.

Harley Quinn gets an Annual, I am Nostradamus!

In an interview with CBR today, Harley Quinn writer Jimmy Palmiotti made mention of Harley Quinn getting an annual, presumably in October, which is a five Wednesday month... WAIT! Haven't we heard this prediction before?!

Batgirl creative team? BAM. Harley Quinn Annual? BAM. Where does it end!? I'll tell you: NOWHERE!

Hal Jordan gets Saint Walker's ass in gear to reboot the Blue Lantern Corps. and Cassandra Cain is the first recruit! Calling it now! Cassandra Cain in SPAAAAAACE, because New 52! I cannot lose!*

(Source: CBR)

*I may have not had a lot to eat today, and I may have just had a beer with a MUCH higher ABV content than I anticipated. So maybe I can lose.

Panels of the Week, 07/10/2014

And we're back! Sorry about the lack of these posts recently, there have been a number of weeks where it was just either one or two books I covered, or some books didn't have any real notable panels... Waste of a post just to go "Hey look at this one panel." BUT NOT THIS WEEK!

Looking Forward: July 16th, 2014

Well, following Grayson this week, we've got another big week for the Batman world in just a couple of days.
  • Robin Rises: Omega #1: Zombie Darkseid Damian? Zombie Darkseid Damian.
  • Harley Quinn Invades Comic-Con International San Diego #1: I predicted that Harley put a hit out on herself, now I'm going to go so far and guess that she meets Dan Didio in this book.
  • Batman Eternal #15: Batwoman looks to finally make her real debut in this title, or maybe that happened this week, I don't know, I'm writing this ahead of time like usual!
  • Batwoman #33: Speaking of Batwoman, Batwoman! More Night Thief, more whats-her-name, and more family court!
SO HOW 'BOUT THEM ANNOUNCEMENTS!? More happened, right? Again... writing this on Sunday. Has a new Catwoman creative team been announced? If not, I don't know if I'm going to make it until next week.

Support FHIZ's potential memorial fund by shopping at the TFAW or Superhero Stuff banners seen on the site!

Batgirl Gets New Creative Team in October

Well, well, well, who could have seen this one coming?

Coming this October, Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher will be taking over writing duties on Batgirl with newcomer artist Babs Tarr handling all the pretty pictures. Along with an all new style and ooh for Babs, which is definitely unique as Didio pointed out, the book will now feature a lighter tone, which is something that I and many others will certainly welcome.

Check out the interview with Stewart and Fletcher at MTV for all the info and some more art/designs.  And yes, I'll be picking this one back up in October.

Also, I'm really not one to gloat. Even though I pretty much figured this out, it was a team effort and I've got to give credit to Gotham Spoilers commenter Hellion for tipping me off to a few things, and would like to acknowledge Twitter user/follower @Yasminamdi, who figured out the artist beforehand, but as you can see, I was a bit skeptical. So congrats guys, great team effort!

Finished Speculating? NEVER!

A little bit ago I got a DM on CBR with the title somewhere along the lines of "Didio on DC All Access" and instantly knew what it was going to be about, because I had this nagging feeling that I forgot something in yesterday's post. You see, in a recent video, Dan Didio talks about the artistic talent on DC's top characters, then goes on to talk about the line as a whole, dropping a sound bite that when I originally heard it, got my attention, but this was before all my crazy speculation... Now though, it could make some sense.

Here's the clip in question, go to about 3:55 in the video.

You catch that?
"and then what you're starting to see on the middle section of the line is some really interesting risks being taken, some different looks, some different styles. You're going to see some different type of looks coming into Batgirl and other books taking place."
Huh. At the time, I took notice to that quote, but like I said, didn't think much of it initially. I asked myself if he was really talking about Fernando Pasarin, because no offense, but I wouldn't classify him as an artist DC is taking a risk with. But then I moved on.

But going back to yesterday... I don't knooooooow. There might be something to this. Maybe Brenden Fletcher and Cameron Stewart aren't taking over Batgirl with a new artist, but perhaps there's a change coming to the title nonetheless?
