Batwing #29 Preview

If you like your Batwing with a little extra helping of Batman on the side, well I've got a comic for you!

Looking Forward: March 5th, 2014

And we are to March already, my how time flies.
  • Detective Comics #29: The finale of Gothtopia, and sadly, John Layman's time on Detective. Only a couple more Eternal issues from him, and that's it! Read Chew!
  • Batman/Superman Annual #1: Finally coming out this time, for real. Mongul's son, Jason, Supergirl, Batgirl, Steel... No idea.
  • Forever Evil - Arkham War #6: Bane fights a bunch of venomed out Arkham inmates, and probably wins... I bet that's pretty much the summary in a nutshell.
  • Batwing #29: Luke Fox's ex-BFF wreaks havoc on Gotham.
Next week will also be the release of Forever Evil #6, which according to the solicits features the "final fate of Nightwing." Who knows if we'll actually get the "final" reveal, because I don't believe solicitations! But what I do know is, I'm gonna be trolling!

And as always, remember to support the site by doing any online comic shopping via my TFAW affiliate banners to the right and bottom of the site.

Batman #29 Early Preview

Welcome back to "Zero Year," with the extra length conclusion of the "Dark City" arc. It's scenes like this where you think "Ah, man... why does that Batman stuff have to happen? Everyone's so nice!"

SPOILERS: Batman/Superman #8

So this is the first part of the Worlds' Finest crossover, and I have been wondering how I'm going to cover it, but luckily, after reading the first part, an answer was given to me: don't.

Short answer, I'm not going to cover this arc, I don't care for it. So what is this post? Well, that's the long answer. I have to post something, so I might as well talk about what happened and tell you why I'm not going to cover it in the traditional sense.

SPOILERS: Talon #16

Picking up where the previous arc left off, Calvin and company are set up in Gotham, and for once, have some down time, so Calvin goes back to practicing his escape methods... wrapped in chains... in a coffin... hung from a crane... with the line burning away... over Gotham Bay. Despite Calvin's best efforts, he isn't able to escape, and drops to the water below, and while waiting to be rescued by Casey's allies, has a startling realization.

Early Previews for March 5th Releases

iBooks was a little later on the update this week, but regardless, these previews are still a week in advance. We got Batman/Superman Annual, Batwing and Detective Comics this time, as I already posted Arkham War's preview a couple days ago. Worth noting that if you have any Apple device, there are a couple more pages you can see (albeit, not that legibly) on each product page in iBooks.

Batman/Superman #8 Preview

Still unsure of how I'm going to deal with this crossover, but I'm leaning towards just putting a few sentences of what happens in Worlds' Finest #20 at the end of the post for this issue.

(Source: USA Today)

Batman: The Dark Knight #28 Preview

Here's the preview. Like I said last week, not covering these last two issues, because I kind of stopped caring... and Man-Bat's dad, also being a Man-Bat, isn't going to sway me, personally speaking.

That Time Catwoman Got Naked on Batman's Yard

Remember the original solicitation for Catwoman #4, way back in December 2011? Probably not, but to refresh your memory, it started off with this line:
Catwoman pays a call on Wayne Manor, but those who live there prefer that you call first.
I was looking forward to whatever that story was going to be, but it never happened, and the "Wayne Manor" sign on the cover got turned into "Beware of Dogs." Fortunately, former Catwoman artist Guillem March gave us a look at what could have been with a few risqué never before seen pages from issue #3, which would have lead into the Wayne Manor plot in issue #4.

In the pages, it looks like Selina figures out that Bruce Wayne = Batman, based on the way they kiss, and then… well, goes to Bruce Wayne's front lawn, and strips down, for whatever reason. Why? Who knows, March says that he'll have pages from issue #4 tomorrow, so perhaps we'll get some context.

Despite the internet shit storm this probably would have ignited, I'm bummed it didn't happen. Bruce and Selina knowing each other's secrets is one of the things I miss most from pre-New 52, so I would have liked to have seen it come back… I mean, hell, I just miss good Batman/Catwoman anything at this point. If Selina did figure out Batman's ID, maybe DC decided they didn't want Catwoman to know that just yet, thus the change. Or perhaps, DC didn't want another reaction like the one to #1, but I'm not sure where production of this issue would fall compared to when #1 was released.

Regardless of all that, I love behind the scenes looks like this one.

Stack Rundown, 02/22/2014

Another short week, aided by me dropping shit left and right, as well as the fact that nothing I read (or plan to read) from Image came out this week, where as next week, I'm reading as many Image titles as I write about in this post alone... Seriously, why is nearly every book scheduled for the last week of the month?

Early Forever Evil: Arkham War #6 Preview

Well, I was holding out that maybe iBooks would update their pre-orders today, but no such luck, perhaps tomorrow. Regardless, Comixology has Arkham War #6 up for pre-order, along with a preview, so might as well post it.

Stephanie Brown's (potential) New 52 Spoiler Design

Dustin Nguyen posted a design sketch to his tumblr of Stephanie Brown, and her complete new Spoiler look. He made a note that he feels people might not like the mask, but the thought behind it was that she's not part of the "Bat Family" yet, so he wanted to avoid the domino mask. Also, given how things do change, the mask could change by the time it needs to be drawn in Batman: Eternal.

My thoughts? I like it. One of my biggest gripes with the original Spoiler costume was the sock mask. At the time, it was whatever, but after Steph's time as Batgirl, and reading some thought process behind that costume, I believe it's very important to see Steph emote. She's not a totally grim serious character all the time, she can be happy, surprised, sad, angry, whatever, and it's all in the face. So while her mouth is covered up, for now, at least we get to see the eyes.

Talon #16 Preview

So, I've been pretty bummed out about how villains like Pyg and Flamingo have been written in the New 52, and while Lord Death Man isn't a Morrison villain, he did recreate him, so hopefully he's as weird and crazy here as he was in Batman, Inc.

Panels of the Week, 02/20/2014

Riddle me this... what does water, skeletons, holograms, and gardening tools have to do with each other? Answer: They all appear in my picks for panels of the week...

And now I realize why no one likes to write the Riddler...

Looking Forward: February 26th, 2014

So, some announcements in regards to books and this site, but let's get to what I'm covering next week.
  • Batman/Superman #8: First part of the delayed First Contact crossover, and Jae Lee returns to the artistic duties.
  • Talon #16: I like Tim Seeley, I like Lord Death Man, these final two issues seem to be right up my alley... and with some heavy hints towards big changes coming to Catwoman soon, I might be pushing Seeley for Catwoman 2014 again, real soon... But I don't know if I can take another broken heart.
So, announcements... Batman/Superman Annual has been delayed again, and will now be released on 3/5. God knows who actually drew that book now. I also don't know how I'm going to cover this Batman/Superman and Worlds' Finest crossover, because I have no interest in buying WF... Uuuuh... Next, you may notice I will not be covering The Dark Knight #28 next week, and that's because... Well, not even Batman is immune to my "Do I really care about this book?" purge I've been going through lately. It's just been a flat book for me these last few months, and I don't have any interest in yet another Man-Bat story, especially since we've gotten so much Man-Bat recently. So that's that.

With that... SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GOTHAM SPOILERS BY BUYING COMIC STUFF THROUGH MY TFAW.COM LINKS. Look at the fancy new Batman: Eternal banner they just gave me! LOOK AT IT! Then click on it. Then buy shit after you click on it... Because that's how I get paid cash money.

SPOILERS: Batman and Two-Face #28

The Gotham mob is broadcasting what they hope to be Two-Face's execution, and Batman is running out of time. Bruce knows Erin is leading him on, not telling him where Harvey's been taken in hopes that the mob gets the job done, but she eventually says he's being held at the old courthouse... Which Bruce doesn't believe, because he notices the "U" in  word "Justice" on the court seal is just a regular "U," where the actual seal uses a Roman "V." So Bruce ejects Erin from the car (leaving her for the cops) and knows where to find Harvey, at an old stage lot.

SPOILERS: Harley Quinn #3

It's Valentine's day, and outside of the assassins trying to kill her (only to get killed themselves) Harley is all alone, and a little depressed. But after her a pep talk from her stuffed beaver (telling her she can't give all her attention to her pet beaver, HAR HAR) and some good news that she got the job at the elderly home, Harley decides to stop feeling sorry for herself and go out to a singles bar, but not before noticing a plant Ivy left for her, with berries Harley decides to snack on before she leaves.

SPOILERS: Batwoman #28

So Maggie's daughter saw a beat up and bloody woman in her mother's bathroom late at night, and it scared her. Everyone's sort of freaked out, Kate tries to apologize to Maggie, who doesn't say anything, just brings Jamie back to bed. So some time later, with the beating Wolf Spider put on her interfering with her personal life, Kate puts the beat down on some thugs, looking for anyone who knows who Wolf Spider is, as a form of stress release... It doesn't work.

SPOILERS: Red Hood and the Outlaws #28

Remember Isabel? The flight attendant that had the hots for Jason, then got pulled into a life of space adventures and OD's via the Joker? Yeah, well, she's on a date with someone else, this dude is totally into her, and she likes him, but is still sort of holding out for Jason, which Other Dude can tell, so he's all "When you figure it out and want to stop living the fantasy, call me." But then the fantasy calls her! Jason's got a bunch of robots in her apartment (which is real nice for a flight attendant) waiting for her, telling her about a private jet that'll bring her to a resort island where they can meet and talk. Just a normal vacation... that of course turns into a big fright between the Outlaws and robots, or something.

Batman Group May 2014 Solicitations

Not a whole lot to note here. No major changes to any teams or anything, Nightwing is still cancelled... Zero Year... Yeah, nothing exactly shocking. To be honest, they're kind of dull.

Some general things to note: DC seems to not know what the fuck the Lobo situation is. Detective Comics' solicit sounds a lot like "Bruce Wayne: Murderer?" and she-who-shall-not-be-named is listed on Catwoman, but that's okay because we know some big changes are coming to the character and book soon.

Batwoman #28 Preview

FAMILY DRAMAAAAAAAAA. Well, sort of family... hopefully family... but you know, DC doesn't like people getting married. Maybe after enough time, Kate will just introduce Maggie's daughter as her own, and on the surface Maggie will be all "that's cute" but secretly resent it inside, until it builds up and builds up, and ultimately, they have a huge fight and break up... Then Dan Didio feeds off the rage.

...What the fuck am I talking about?

SPOILERS: Batman Beyond 2.0, Chapters #13 & 14

With Bruce and Terry captured, the Mayor is getting impatient waiting for Barbara’s “team” to iron out the Man-Bat situation, and readies his special forces to go in. Elsewhere, Terry wakes up in a cell across from Bruce, and it’s time for Man-Bat story time!

Stack Rundown, 02/15/2014

And my "Do I care about this book? No? Then why the hell am I reading it?" streak continues. Cut couple of Forever Evil tie-ins, because I've thought the side stuff hasn't been that great, and then one of the Marvel redemption codes I got fucked up and didn't actually add the book to my digital library, but I wasn't all that disappointed, so I dropped that one too. I'm straight ruthless with my drops these days. So, a little shorter list than I had initially intended this week... also supplemented by the fact that practically everything I read from Image comes out at the end of the month.

Batman and's Other Half for May

Well, this has been known for a bit via sneaky practices, but I'm in the habit of waiting for official word these days... But good news! That word has come from DC's May variant theme announcement... Batman and will be Batman and Frankenstein in May.

You may remember, Frankenstein appeared in the first post-Robin issue of the title, with Batman having the genius idea of Frankensteining Damian back to life. With this next arc mentioning Damian or Ra's al Ghul in each solicit, I'm willing to bet Batman is going to be seeking help in a more friendly manner this time around.

On a random note, I'm surprised DC hasn't given out any interviews on this subject, because whatever this story is could very well be pretty big... that is, unless the whole arc is titled Batman and Red Herring.

Batman and Two-Face #28 Preview

That "here's where you get off" moment was pretty great. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Batman is at his best when he's kind of a dick.

More Batman: Eternal Artists Announced

Solicits are coming at some point, that's for sure, and the first solicits we're seeing out of Gotham are for Batman: Eternal #5-8. Things get a bit weird from issue #3 on, instead of having one artist do a few issues, like Jason Fabok on #1-3, it seems from #4 on it's different artists doing single issues, which... I don't know how I feel about that, but I don't think it'd be possible to keep without tons of fill-in if DC aimed to do a few consecutive issues from a single artist.

That said, four new artists joint he project, two of which I guessed in Guillem March and Andy Clarke, joining them will be Trevor McCarthy of Batwoman and Emanuel Simeoni of Talon. No word on who's writing these individual issues, as DC's being not specific and just listing all the writers, which isn't how this series works, according to the writers themselves, but oh well, I guess we'll figure that out when the issues actually come out. Here's the solicit text for each issue.

#5: As the Dark Knight's weekly series continues, Red Robin takes center stage in a major Gotham City mystery that has Harper and Cullen Row caught in the crosshairs!

#6: Something hellish is brewing in the tunnels under Arkham Asylum…and Batman's going to need the help of The Demon to stop it!

#7: New players enter the gang war that's setting Gotham City ablaze.

#8: Is Stephanie Brown an assassination target?

I bet Ray Fawkes is at least writing the one that mentions Etrigan (that's a weird twist).

Early Previews for February 26th

A couple of notes... Batman/Superman Annual #1 has been delayed yet again, this time to March 5th... and I bet it's going to be an inconsistent art mess at this point. Then, in regards to Batman: The Dark Knight, given my issues with the book, I don't think I'm going to cover these last two issues, I just don't think they're worth the time.

Panels of the Week, 02/13/2014

Panels of the week post where I post panels and I don't know, that's cool I guess?

Looking Forward: February 19th, 2014

Woooo, after this week, April can't come soon enough, so as far as I'm concerned, let's keep pumping out these weeks so we can get to the main event.
  • Batman and Two-Face #28: The finale of the Two-Face arc, next up... Aquaman!
  • Harley Quinn #3: My new favorite series sees Harley lonely on Valentine's day, possibly more Ivy? Possibly more innuendo?
  • Batwoman #28: Maggie's daughter knows Kate's secret, and that's probably not a great situation for all involved.
  • Red Hood and the Outlaws #28: James Tynion's final issue on the series, he leaves with the Outlaws attempting to get some R&R.
It's a safe bet that solicitations will come next week at the latest, given that Monday is a holiday, if we don't have them before then, I'd guess we'd get them on Tuesday again.

AS ALWAYS... Support your local Gotham Spoilers website by buying any comic related stuff you need through their affiliate banners.

Until next week! ...or whenever I have something new to post.

SPOILERS: Lots to talk about in Batman #28

SHIT, SON… Man, there’s a lot to talk about with Batman #28, much more than I could in my review, so this post is a mix of spoilers/opinion on everything Batman #28. This was one of those issues that when I read it, I was taking notes on the side of things that were mentioned, questions I had, and so on. That said, I did read this issue for the first time around 1am Tuesday morning, and I’m writing this before today (Wednesday) where I’ll read it again, so I may have missed some details in my weird mental combination of being exhausted and excited at the same time, which you can comment about, and I might edit the post to reflect my thoughts on anything I may have missed.

So that said, obviously, if you haven’t read this issue yet, don’t bother with this post, because reading it will be a whole lot better than just reading what I say about it. So, SPOILERS.

SPOILERS: Batman #28

NOTE: If you don't know what happens in this issue, I'm going to tell you right now, that trust me... this is one of those better read, as my write up can't do it proper justice. Just saying.

One night, sometime into the future of Gotham, Harper Row is out alone on the streets, which are being monitored heavily by security and police, who find Harper and inform her that she’s in violation of curfew. After some sarcastic banter from Harper, before the cops enforce some police brutality on her, she tells them “Midnight in Gotham is the bee’s knees.” The cops stop, and instead of giving her a nightstick sandwich, they take her away in a van instead. The next thing Harper knows, she has a hood taken off her head, having said the magic words, she’s in The Egyptian, a secret nightclub within Gotham.

SPOILERS: Nightwing #28

Spinebender (remember #4) is back in town... well, in Gotham, creating all sorts of problems. Turns out he doesn't have much time left to live, so he decides to go out on his own terms... by taking Nightwing with him, but Dick manages to hook on to a passing car in order to get away from Spinebender before he overloads himself with electricity and explodes. Bye, Spinebender?

SPOILERS: Batgirl #28

Meet Silver, he's got some money, he lives in Gotham, and he's crazy. Silver isn't a fan of vampires, presumably because he doesn't like the Twilight franchise, but who knows... Because he's another bat-shit crazy Gothamite, he just so happens to think that the "Bats" of Gotham are oppressive vampires, the villains of Gotham are freedom fighters, and he's the one who has to rid Gotham of its Bat problem... another well balanced individual.

Yo, I heard you guys like Batman origins!

Back when Redundant Secret Origins was announced, after we found out that it starts with Superman's origin, I made a joke along the lines of "Krypton doomed, spaceship, Smallville, done... Can't wait to see Batman's parents shot for the 100th time in #2."

...I was joking, I really was.

So now, #2 is coming with the origin of Batman! You know... his parents getting shot for the hundredth time. But what's really ridiculous about this is the fact that we've got a year-long origin story, which will still be going on by the time this issue hits the stands.

And then as a cherry on top, you got your standard PR nonsense from DC's twitter.

Um, no? Literally nothing could make me anxious about this. Nothing.

Batman #31 Cover Reveal

Move the fuck over Green Arrow! Batman's got a bow now! Oh, and Hawkeye? You think you got angst? Meet fucking Batman!

(Source: LA Times Hero Complex)

Is Nightwing a "Bird" Related Name?

Another panel from Batman #28. Bird high, Bat low... Hmm. I guess you could refer to Nightwing as a bird-ish name, but I don't know. If anything, while I may have been mostly convinced this is Harper Row, I've never been sold on the idea of her taking the name of Nightwing.

All that said, Her hair is definitely different than Harper's. Definitely longer than we have seen in the preview panels of Harper as a civilian. And all purple, no blue... Definitely a reason to doubt.

(Source: LA Times Hero Complex)

Haaaarper!!! ...?

Another shot from Batman #28, and the writing is pretty much on the wall at this point, that's probably Harper. Closer inspection shows a Monroe style piercing on the "mystery" lady, which Harper also has in the previews for this issue.

But there's still something that has me doubting this just a bit. The hair color seems to be changing, in this panel the long hair is purple, where we see its blue in the other pages. Maybe it's just because we're looking at her from a different angle, or they're actually addressing "Hey, she'd be pretty recognizable outside of her costume."

Also, her stature seems pretty large compared to Batman, who granted, is kneeling, but in the image from this post, they're both standing next to each other, and Batman isn't that much taller. Harper has never stuck me as that tall, but I'll admit, Nguyen sometimes has some weird proportions to his stuff, I still don't like how he drew Tim in Detective Comics.

Look, I'm 95% sure that's Harper Row, but there's still this nagging feeling that it being her could be too obvious, so I'm just hedging my bets when I tell you that come Wednesday, and we find out it's not Harper, I won't be surprised.

Nightwing #28 Preview

Nightwing butt shot! Kiss those goodbye because he's gonna die!

I hope Russell Dauterman gets some work after these two issues, because I'm really enjoying what I'm seeing here.

(Source: Multiversity)

Batman #28 Preview

All this minus the double page spread was posted here last month, so... Egyptian themed night club? And given that in one of those images Snyder posted, we see Batman and that mysterious lady at this club... gonna guess it once again confirms that it's Harper.

Early Previews for February 19th's Books

Got another round of previews for next-next week's books, this time we got Harley Quinn (HOORAY), Batwoman, James Tynion's final Red Hood and the Outlaws, and the final issue of Batman and Two-Face before Aquaman take's Harvey's place.

Stack Rundown, 02/08/2014

Pretty heavy DC week, capped off by the release of the delayed Forever Evil #5... I got the inside scoop that DC editorial wasn't happy with how little Batman has been emasculated recently, so everything had to be redone. You heard it here first! Hot, totally not made up scoop, from Gotham Spoilers!

Batgirl #28 Preview

I haven't been digging the melodrama in this title lately, and the fact that the last story was so broken up by crossovers and events, I'm hoping this arc sort of gets things back on track.

Panels of the Week, 02/06/2014

I'm kind of getting tired of doing these posts, because some weeks it's just me scraping the bottom of the barrel, while nothing really stands out I'm just trying to find something to post. I might reformat this in the future.

Looking Forward: February 12th, 2014

Next week is the week we get a look into the middle of Batman: Eternal, so that's pretty big!
  • Batman #28: Smack dab into the middle of things with this one, apparently we're getting a lot of spoilers, and hopefully that's not hyperbole.
  • Nightwing #28: Kyle Higgins begins to wrap up his run on Nightwing, how much you want to bet Zsasz shows up, and he needs to be brought back to Gotham?
  • Batgirl #28: Vampires? All I know is I, Vampire was mentioned in #29's solicit, which is enough to get me to pay attention.
In Stack Rundown this week, I try a couple of new Marvel books, and an issue that I never thought I would read... Then what else is coming next week... Hmm, not even going to bother saying "May solicits could hit" because at this point, who knows what DC's schedule is on that front... but it could still happen I guess? Maybe... Probably not.

And finally, remember to support Gotham Spoilers by buying any comics or graphic novels you might need through my affiliate links, you know, if you're into this fancy new "internet shopping" trend.

SPOILERS: Batman Kicks Some Dude's Face in #28

Scott Snyder posted a couple more sneak peaks of Batman #28 where Batman takes it to some poor son of a bitch's face. You know… usual Batman stuff… Then in the next one…

Batman being Batman…

In all seriousness, I'm loving seeing Dustin Nguyen drawing Batman again. Does the heart good!

New Writer for Catwoman in March?

Last time Catwoman was mentioned on this site... I wasn't exactly happy. Well, it seems someone might have finally fucking listened to me! Because Bleeding Cool is reporting that the solicitation and writer have been changed for March's #29.

Instead of she-who-shall-not-be-named writing, Sholly Fisch will take over writing #29 and here's the updated solicitation:
In this story, Catwoman goes undercover via Gotham City’s high society when she’s recruited to infiltrate WayneTech! But what – or who – is lurking within?
What does this mean? Is she gone for good? Is this just an inventory issue? Is Fisch the new writer, or is he filling space while DC finds a new permanent solution? What I know for sure is, I'll at least by buying Catwoman #29 in March.
