Say Goodbye to Li'l Gotham

Today sees the release of the final chapter of Batman: Li'l Gotham, and while the print version is a little behind, there'll be no more new chapters in 2014. Sad, but this series that was a love letter to the Batman family ends with just that, a Holiday themed love letter to the Bat family. Really great chapter, that's for sure.

SPOILERS: Batman Beyond 2.0, Chapters #9 & 10

Sometime after the Rewire chaos in Neo Gotham, some guys are out on a job, scanning for damage to the historical district, or something, the point is, they have some sort of sonic device they’re using for scanning, probably echo or something. Everything is going well, until a hooded woman and some thugs surround them. The two guys try and fight back/run, but they’re soon enveloped by a descending shadow of a bat, making a deafening screeching noise.

Stack Rundown, 12/21/2013

Last week I had 17 books to write up... this week I have 19. That's a lot of comics. So I'm going to keep this part short, because lord knows I've already done a lot of writing.

Batwoman #26 Preview

Oh yeeeeeeeeah! It's past midnight, so you know what that means, hot late night lesbian action!

...Because you know, Batwoman is a lesbian?

Going for a Skinamax parody here... because it's late...

Shut up!

Panels of the Week, 12/19/2013

Well, since I don't really like the art in Red Hood, I doubled down on the other titles to make this post more than two images.

Looking Forward: December 31st, 2013

No books to cover next week, because DC is only releasing Forever Evil and Justice League. I'll probably do a post sometime after Christmas about whatever happens with Batman and Catwoman, but no regular posts until New Year's week. Books will be coming out that Tuesday.
  • Damian - Son of Batman #3: Last we saw, Damian was thrown off a building... He'll probably survive that.
  • Batman - The Dark Knight #26: Apparently, this is an almost entirely silent issue, which makes my job easier!
  • Batwoman #26: New writer Marc Andreyko's first real issue, so, fingers crossed that it's good!
  • Talon #14: James Tynion's final issue of the series, and the final battle between Calvin and the Court... for now.
Remember when last week's Stack Rundown post may have been the biggest yet? Well, this week may be one bigger, since Image decided to release new issues of a good majority of the books I read from them this week.  What else to look forward to this week? I'll have a post about the last few chapters of Batman Beyond 2.0, so there's that. Then on Sunday, the final chapter of Batman: Li'l Gotham will be released, and that's sad.

Finally, it's the holiday season, and you know what the true meaning of the holidays are? To support your favorite one-man-operation comic site, by doing all your online comic shopping through his TFAW affiliate banner links!

First Look at Manapul's Detective… and Batwoman?

Soon to be Detective Comics artist (and co-writer) Francis Manapul has been posting some sneak peeks  on his Instagram account. Based on some layout photos he posted earlier, this seems to be an upcoming cover, potentially for April's #30?

But it doesn't stop there… He's also been posting some art featuring Kate Kane… you know, Batwoman?

Uuuuh? At first I thought Batwoman may just appear in an issue of Detective, but then I got to thinking, especially after Manapul answered a fan question saying his work on the character would be just a "small appearance." The art looked very Batwoman specific, including characters like her sister Alice, who would seem out of place in Detective Comics… but you know where she wouldn't be out of place? That Batwoman Annual.

So if Manapul is solicited next month drawing at least a couple of pages for that Batwoman Annual, don't expect me to be surprised!

(Source: Francis Manapul's Instagram)

SPOILERS: Batman and Two-Face #26

Erin McKillen is seated at a table in Wayne Manor, with Bruce telling her that Matches Malone ransomed her off to the highest bidder, and knowing that they shared a past, "contacted" Bruce who "saved" her from being auctioned to one of the families who may want her dead. Erin doesn't take to Bruce's form of hospitality that well, and once she's untied, hits him, and asks if she can leave, calling her cousin to pick her up.

SPOILERS: Harley Quinn #1

Harley's got a new home at Coney Island to get to, so she's packed up all her belongings on a motorcycle, and has sped off to New York with the stuffed beaver that talks to her in her head... Yep. On her way into the city, Harely liberates a poor wiener dog from his hipster owner, and ends up getting attacked by an assassin out to kill her. Doesn't go well for the assassin, because Harley takes her hammer and sends his head flying into the river.

SPOILERS: Red Hood and the Outlaws #26

Years ago, it's confirmed that Talia resurrected Jason via Lazarus Pit, and had special plans for him, which are probably coming true now, as he and his friends are at the mercy of Ra's al'Ghul who has gone mad with power, thanks to absorbing the Untitled's power, or whatever. Watching from elsewhere, Essence feels it's time for her to help, but Ducra stops her, telling her daughter that this is Jason's moment, and her role in the upcoming events is yet to come.

Stack Rundown, 12/14/2013

I may have to check on this, but this may be the longest Stack Rundown post I've done yet. 17 issues... Actually, no, I'm not going to check on that. Let's just say I did and this is the longest post I've done for this feature. Okay? Okay.

Red Hood and The Outlaws #26 Preview

The title of this issue is "Remembering" and the lettering of it is fading in... I WONDER IF THIS MEANS JASON WILL START TO REGAIN HIS MEMORIES, YOU GUYS!?

(Source: Comic Vine)

SPOILERS: The Dick Grayson Report, 12/13/13

This guy is still alive? ...Fiiiiiiiiiine, I guess I should mention him. This week, Justice League #25 came out, and we learned a bit more about Owlman's obsession with Earth-Prime... Earth-0... whatever the fuck the regular DC Earth is called's Dick Grayson. So, let's talk about the walking corpse, shall we?

Harley Quinn #0 was #2 in November

I don't usually do posts about sales, because that's not my thing, but this one is too crazy not to make note of. November sales are in, and Harley Quinn debuted #2, only bested by Batman #25.

That's insane. Like... Harley Quinn insane.

Last I checked, Batman consistently sold around the 120k range, so it's a safe bet Harely Quinn did well over 100k last month, and it's not as if the title had 10 variant covers to boost sales or something like that. Harley beat the likes of Superman Unchained, Forever Evil, Infinity, Superior Spider-Man and a new damn X-Men book, who could have expected this?

Last month, if you asked me to give you a realistic expectation I had for Harley Quinn #0's sales, I probably would have said something around 50k. That seems fair, right? Well liked character, but certainly not Batman level A-list, debuting an off beat comedy book. Sure, lots of crazy talented artists involved, but still, I would have said 50k was a good estimate... yeeeeeeeah, double that.

So, all that's left to say is a congratulations to Jimmy, Amanda and everyone who worked on that issue, they clearly knocked it out of the park with this one. Harley Quinn #1 is in stores next Wednesday, and I am very much looking forward to it.

(also, to all those forum posters who bitched that Harley couldn't hold her own series and no one wanted one... hahahahaha!)

Talon Cancelled in March

Figured this one deserved its own post as well. Title says it all, Talon will conclude in March, alongside Batman: The Dark Knight and Animal Man. I've got a feeling we may see more in April, or the coming months in general, but no use in speculating now.

This is another one that shouldn't come as a surprise. As soon as Tim Seeley was announced to be writing it... but only two issues, it seemed too oddly specific not to see the writing on the wall. Seeley will end the title with Calvin in search of a way to reverse the Talon...Talonfying? process he went through after Bane killed him.

Sad to see this one go. I, like a lot of people, went from "Wow, DC is milking the shit out of this" to "Man, this is a pretty good book" shortly after its first issue. Calvin is a cool fucking character, and James Tynion did a fantastic job introducing him to the universe, a feat that's not easy given how many new characters in the New 52 are introduced with the "HERE'S A NEW CHARACTER, CARE ABOUT THEM IMMEDIATELY!" mentality. Calvin was introduced well, and built up gradually to a very likable character. Hopefully he sticks around in the Batman universe.

Batman Group March 2014 Solicitations

Well, now that the unpleasantness is out of the way, how about some solicitations. As noted before, The Dark Knight is cancelled, and guess what? So is Talon. I bet there will be more next month, but we'll have to wait and see.

Changes to this month's books:
  • Batman and Aquaman... not exactly Ra's al Ghul, but he's mentioned in the solicits. This sounds like it may be a one issue thing.
  • Jason Masters is drawing Batwoman.
  • Will Pfeifer and Rafa Sandoval are your new Red Hood creative team, as previously announced.
  • Jae Lee is back on Batman/Superman, but will be drawing February's issue as well, so no Rocafort.
  • Robson Rocha drawing Birds of Prey.
Hit the jump for the full Batman Group Solicits... Nope, not intentionally leaving one out or anything.

This isn't funny anymore, DC

"The Race of Outlaws starts here!"

As in a new fucking arc? You have to be kidding me. I'm done. I'm fucking done. Catwoman is dead. DC could have saved her, but they apparently didn't want to.

At this point, I'm just going to refuse to acknowledge this title's existence. Removing it from the side bar, not going to tweet about it, not going to say a damn thing, because DC has made it perfectly clear, that they think the current direction for Catwoman's solo title is A-OK. It's not, but oh well, fuck em.

So, goodbye Catwoman, as far as I'm concerned, you were cancelled along with Talon and The Dark Knight.

Merry fucking Christmas.

Adam Hughes' Harley Quinn #1 Variant

Saw this on Reddit, don't know where it originated from, but apparently it's the WIP version, we'll probably get the finished version when the preview hits sometime before Tuesday.

Panels of the Week, 12/12/2013

12... 12... 13! GAH! Lame. This year is terrible. What? Oh yeah, panels.

Batman: The Dark Knight Ends in March

What is this? Is DC making the writers do their dirty work? (I'm kidding... mostly) First Lemire posts a blog entry that Animal Man is ending in March, now Gregg Hurwitz announces the end of Batman: The Dark Knight? Scandalous.

As I predicted, the title will be ending in March with issue #29, illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver. Head over to Gregg Hurwitz's blog to read his goodbyes to the Batman universe... for now.

(Source: Gregg Hurtwiz's Blog)

Looking Forward: December 18th, 2013

Batwoman was also originally supposed to come out this week, but that's not happening... Not going to complain about less work.
  • Harley Quinn #1: After the fourth wall was left shattered and broken, time to get to the actual series... which will probably still be super crazy.
  • Batman and Two-Face #26: Gangs! Batmans! Two-Faces! No Carrie Kelleys... shhh, she doesn't exist again...
  • Red Hood and the Outlaws #26: I pronounce it "RAZ" al'Ghul, SCREW YOU ALL!
Also... maybe solicitations will actually come next week? DC seemed to want to get some announcements out of the way before, but I don't know why they just didn't do it last week, and not make solicits late. Maybe they'll come out Friday? I don't know. Cancellations are coming though, Animal Man has already been confirmed as one by Lemire.

Anyways, Panels of the Week will be coming shortly, and it's a pretty large Stack Rundown this week, with thoughts on new titles such as Dead Body Road. Remember to support Gotham Spoilers by buying stuff via the affiliate links I've got, always appreciated.

Futures End, Batman Beyond Begins

I kind of hate myself for that headline, but oh well. So, you may have heard the news today, DC announced it's second weekly title for 2014, The New 52: Futures End, once thought to be called "Five Years Later." Written by Jeff Lemire, Brian Azzarello, Keith Giffen and Dan Jurgens, the title will feature the DCU, five years into the future where shit has apparently gone real bad.

Just take a look at that image... What the fuck is going on there? Well, I got some thoughts, which I'll share with you after the jump.

SPOILERS: Batman #26

One day, long ago, young Bruce Wayne is in the theatre, by himself, watching Zorro, when Commissioner Gordon enters the theatre, and tells him that he's under arrest. ZERO YEAR!

SPOILERS: Forever Evil - Arkham War #3

Mad Hatter is with Mr. Freeze, attempting to resurrect the frozen Talons (which Freeze has a problem with) while the rest of Gotham remains in a large battle, and Killer Croc, who rescued Scarecrow and Man-Bat, returns Crane to the surface. To repay Croc, Crane promises Croc and his followers Wayne Tower, telling him its time they emerged from the sewers and took their rightful place.

SPOILERS: Nightwing #26

Ten years ago, scientists discovered an element called Kanium, and mixing that with Carbon and Oxygen ended up creating a pretty strong anti-psychotic drug, being tested (and stolen) in Chicago. Who's stealing it? Well, remember that mimic lady from the first Chicago issue, Mali? The one who talks to herself and could use an anti-psychotic... Yeah, her! And her good pal Nightwing is waiting for her on the roof of a hospital as she emerges from her latest heist. '

SPOILERS: Batgirl #26

Knightfall's gang of metahumans are ready to start torturing and killing James Gordon, but you're reading Batgirl, so of course she comes in to save the day, with a flying motorcycle through the window. With the element of surprise, Babs manages to fend off the likes of Mirror, Bonebreaker, and everyone else off temporarily, while she and her father retreat deeper into the house to regroup.

Batman #28 Takes a Zero Year Break

So it would turn out that like Batman #24, the final issue of the second arc of Zero Year ("Dark City") ended up being a bit longer than your standard issue, and with holidays coming up, team Batman figured out a way to give artist Greg Capullo more time on the issue.

So, February's #28, the finale to "Dark City" gets pushed back to March's #29. In place of this issue, #28 will feature a story written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion, with art by Dustin Nguyen, set six months in the future of the current timeline of Gotham, meaning this issue jumps into the middle of whatever status quo Batman: Eternal will set up. A total "spoiler" issue (note: I don't think that means anything specific in regards to you-know-who, but you never know) as Snyder puts it... So basically it's like Five Years Later but hush, hush, that totally doesn't exist maybe.

Above you can take a look at a character design by Dustin Nguyen, and if you don't like Zero Year (because you're crazy) then TOO BAD! Gonna last a month longer. Also it seems by some talk in this post that Eternal might be a summer thing, rather than spring... Hopefully not though!

EDIT: The hot theory on the internet is that this is some Nightwing 2.0 Harper Row. I can see why people may think that. Piercing, funky hair that's dyed, etc... But I don't buy into it. For a couple of reasons...

One, Harper is a pretty street level character, whoever this character is has a gun larger than her entire body, and unless Batman: Eternal gets that fucking crazy, I don't see Harper going from street level electrician to "Rob Liefeld can go cry in a corner CUS LOOK HOW BIG MY GUN IS!" vigilante. Second, I doubt DC would spoil Harper becoming Nightwing in a character design sketch. Third, Dustin Nguyen described this as a new character, so take that for what you will.

Will Pfeifer to Write Red Hood and the Outlaws

Well, I predicted there would be some changes soon, and here we go. And I'm not surprised! What is a bit surprising is the choice of new writer, we haven't heard Pfeifer's name it some time. Regardless! In March 2014, Pfeifer will be taking over for Tynion, whose got Batman: Eternal to write, and will be joined by Catwoman artist Rafa Sandoval, which makes me think a change could be coming there too! (YAY!)

Here's the solicitation text for the issue: "Jason and Kori set out to deliver justice to alien murderers, but they’ll need to steal a spaceship to do it! Now who in The New 52 has something like that they could “borrow”…?"

Batman #26 Preview (The Real One)

Like I guessed, here's the real preview.

(Source: Nerdist)

Batman #26 Preview

I don't know if this actually counts as a preview, since the LA Times did this thing where they posted an interview and a couple of panels last time, then some other site had the actual preview, but as of now, here you go.

Forever Evil: Arkham War #3 Preview

Look at the bottom left corner of that double page spread. Are we getting our second look at "Not-Harley Quinn, because the real one is off doing something in a different book, but seriously, it's not, look, different hair!" ???

Remember her from Batman #1?

Man, what's her story!?

Stack Rundown, 12/07/2013

Don't worry everyone! No one died this week, compared to last's massacre... Well, not in the books I read, at least. But really, does anything else matter? I'm from the internet, so clearly my tastes are the chosen tastes!

Nightwing #26 Preview

Okay, so it would seem we're dealing with that mimic character from the first Chicago issue, so that's what these next few issues are going to be about... Maybe!

Batwing #29 Cover (Probably)

Writer Justin Gray posted this image on twitter which seems to be a cover for Batwing drawn by Rafael Albuquerque. Likely, it's the cover to #29, which will be solicited Monday, but then again, it could be a cover that takes the place of a previously solicited cover, because that happens sometimes. We'll see Monday, I guess.

Batgirl #26 Preview

Oh look at that, Daniel Sampere is drawing it, didn't notice that when I saw the finished cover last week. Well, that's good... I prefer his work to the most recent artist.

Predictions: Batman Family Books in 2014

Last year, before we got too deep into the new year, I made a post about some things I'd like to see in the Batman universe. Some of my hopes happened, and then some... well let's just say I just realized I've spent a fucking year saying that Catwoman needs a new writer who isn't horrible. But never mind all that, time for the new shit! March 2014 solicitations are (most likely) due Monday, and with them brings the end of Forever Evil, which DC has promised will change the DCU, and every book will catch up to that post-Forever Evil status quo. Whatever happens with the DCU, I'm willing to bet we get cancellations and new books, because let's be honest, DC needs some, as they've sat around while Marvel literally announces 20+ new #1s, most of which are new titles.

With all that in mind, I don't believe the Batman family will be immune any longer to the old cancellation axe, and I may be in for some "______ cancelled" news posts here at Gotham Spoilers as earliest as next week, or perhaps with April's solicitations in January. So what am I here to do? Well, I'm going to go through each Batman family book, one by one, and tell you what I think may be in store for it in 2014.

So let's begin!

Thursday, December 5, 2013

Oh Hey, Look… Detective Comics #29

This is not a leak, because, for whatever reason, this page/solicit is just sitting on DC's website at the moment… So uh, here's your solicitation, because it's probably going to be taken down at some point.

Panels of the Week, 12/05/2013

True story, when typing the title for this post, I put November up there instead of December, then came to realize it's fucking December. What just happened?

Looking Forward: December 11th, 2013

This just in, next week will have Batman related books, and I will have posts about them.
  • Batman #26: Zero Year continues, and we get some answers to that pretty WTF Lucius Fox cliffhanger from the previous issue.
  • Forever Evil - Arkham War #3: Bane gets super wasted and runs around in the Batsuit.
  • Nightwing #26: Absolutely no idea what's going to be happening in these next few issues.
  • Batgirl #26: "Batgirl: Wanted" comes to an end.
There's a little more than the usual posts coming this week, on Friday, in advance of solicitations which will probably hit next week, I'll have a post with all my predictions for each and every Batbook, and where they'll be come post-Forever Evil, assuming DC actually makes some changes to their line.

And as always, YOU GOT COMICS TO BUY FOR GIFTS?! Then I suggest purchasing them through my affiliate banners. You'll get a discounted price, get your shopping done, and support Gotham Spoilers, all at once! It's pretty wizard.

SPOILERS: Earth 2 Batman on Dealing With the Joker

Earth 2 #18 came out today, and it saw Thomas Wayne Batman breaking people out of the World Army's Arkham base to help in the war against Darkseid brainwashed Superman. Who's in the World Army's lock up? Aquawoman, Jimmy Olsen, and hey, the Joker! So what happened with these two?
