SPOILERS: Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #6

Man... I liked this book so much from the start, but these past two issues really didn't stick the landing, at all.

The Spoilers:

So Helena's mother is alive. Turns out, both thought the other was dead. The guy Fenice is after was her lover, and he conspired with her to kill her husband so she could take the children to live with him elsewhere. Shit went bad, that's when everyone thought everyone was dead.

In the end, Helena still gives up her mother to the police. Team goes back to Gus and goes "You're in, we guess" because let's all give a shit about this guy, right? They leave, turns out he's on some meds and someone is making sure the Birds trust him.

The Opinion:

Yeah, like I said, just didn't like these past two issues at all. Let's get the big one out of the way. Fuck Gus.

Fuck that dude.

I said my part last month where the last thing I want in any Birds of Prey book is some random no name that I'm supposed to care about. These books have gotten fucked up one way or another for the past couple years, just stick with the basics for a while, damn. The only saving grace is the fact that the last page leaves an opening for him to be kicked the hell out of this book.

Then there's the Huntress stuff. A lot of my issues with this, outside of it just being somewhat hamfisted and anticlimactic, is logic stuff. So we got Rebirth right. Not really a reboot, but we're bringing back stuff. Helena was the the leader of fucking Spyral. Say what you will about the New 52, but it had some cool shit, and that was one of them. So telling me the head of DC's most insane spy agency didn't have any idea her mother was alive is a weird logic leap, and it just compounds the fact that I hate they've thrown all that under the rug so far.

Art is really suffering too. Roge Antonio works in a pinch sometimes... but he's increasingly become an artist I don't want to see relied on in length. The art just looks to be comprised of rudimentary shapes on some pages and overall, lacks detail for the colorist to work off of and comes off very flat. Really hope Claire Roe isn't off the title and if she is, I hope that DC doesn't just settle, because the art has really been suffering.
