Looking Forward: July 26th, 2017

Forgot to do this post again, WHOOPS!
  • All-Star Batman #12: I swore this book came out two weeks ago...
  • Detective Comics #961: Azrael Batman suit coming back, we 90s now!
Comic-con is going on. Stuff is happening! Cool announcements are happening!

I'll be on vacation next week too... So when will I post, I don't know!

Batman and The Signal Announced at SDCC

Worst kept secret for a few months now is that Duke Thomas was going to get his own book. Hell, I didn't even bother teasing it because Snyder was out there saying it flat out.

Nevertheless, it was announced today at SDCC. Duke's codename has finally been chosen, and it's The Signal, not Lark, thank god. DC writers workshop alumni Tony Patrick will be writing it, with Scott Snyder assisting. No artist is attached as of yet.

Not sure what to think yet. There's still a good deal to be explained about Duke and the way he fits into everything, but I'll check it out. I do think that Batman: The Signal is kind of a clunky name, especially when it's not Batman's book, or so you'd think.

Expect daylight.

All-Star Batman #12 Preview

Tiger Shark has had a rough go of it, lately.

Arkham Asylum 2 Announced at SDCC

Look, I never have high expectations for DC SDCC announcements. The con is just so packed with anything but comics trying to make big announcements, it really has become where they announce an expected thing or two, then more on... I'm expecting an Outsiders or something book from Jeff Lemire and Ivan Reis for Dark Matter then word on this not exactly monthly thing All-Star Batman is turning into with other titles in the same style.

Then they just announced Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham are creating Arkham Asylum 2, set in the Damian Wayne #666 future.

SPOILERS: Batman #27

Leave it to the guy who wrote the Vision, and made it one of the best books in recent history, to make Kite Man an interesting character. Kite Man.

SPOILERS: Nightwing #25

Things don't go well in Dick's life... I'm sure you could figure them out if you've read the other issues, but hey... he gets a job this time!

Nightwing #25 Preview

I usually just take a cropped screenshot of something and link to the site to direct traffic to where it should go... but see, Comicbook.com uses an ad-blocker blocker, fine whatever, I'll turn it off for two seconds because I'm totally going to click on ads now, right... Yeah, fuck this garbage. Just hit the jump for all the images, I'll save you the trouble from this nonsense.

Looking Forward: July 19th, 2017

Solicitations next week, as well as SDCC, and I feel like DC might have some stuff going for them around the convention... but they'll probably announce it all beforehand.
  • Batman #27: I think this is a Clay Mann issue for Kite-Man (Hell yeah!)
  • Nightwing #25: Bigger issue for the #25... more pages to break up with your girlfriend with!
  • Batwoman #5: I didn't come out of the last arc too enthused, so I may skip over the epilogue next week.
That's about it... also, Azrael is getting his Bat suit back, I'm sure we've all seen that by now.

Dark Nights: Metal #1 First Look

When I first heard the finer details of this book, it was described to me as imagining the other side of Grant Morrison's Multiversity map... I'm glad they're quite literally turning it over in here.

Batman: White Knight from Sean Murphy Announced

Sean Murphy's long-awaited Batman title has been announced, and it may be more a Joker title than anything. Batman: White Knight will see the roles in Gotham reversed with a reformed politician/Don Draper like Joker, trying to take down Batman who is seen as a villain. The first issue arrives October 4th.

First of all, the art is spectacular, fucking love that. Second of all, color me surprised to see a out of left field take on the mythos. I was expecting Sean Murphy just to do his own Batman thing, but he's pulling some drastic things, so I'm very interested in that.

I'm going to also assume that this book will be under the banner of whatever it is that DC is doing with a "new format" as described by Scott Snyder, whose All-Star Batman will be reformatted along with Sean Murphy (unrelated to this project). Disappointed we didn't hear much about that news, figured this would be the flagship, but Bleeding Cool is reporting that the initiative is lead by Mark Doyle, who is the former Bat-editor that just got promoted within DC.

If you're looking for more details, Sean Murphy is talking a lot about the book on Twitter. Seven to eight issues (I hope eight, ending books on an odd number never sits well with me, dunno why), five of which are already done. Will be in color, but he hopes to release a B&W version down the line. Not "in-continuity."

Looking Forward: July 12th, 2017

HEY! Comics. Tomorrow should be that Sean Murphy announcement, and probably some Dark Matter stuff and probably some other whatever the new format of book DC is doing stuff.
  • Dark Days: The Casting #1: Real curious to see how we get from point A to B with Metal on the horizon.
  • All-Star Batman #12: All I want is to know the name of the cool looking villain in this arc.
  • Detective Comics #960: Azrael and Zatanna! Weird combo, but I'll take it.
Birds of Prey is also out this week, but hey, I hate the new Oracle and I really fucking hate Calculator, so doubtful I'll read that... Then I just lost interest half way through the last Gotham Academy, so that's probably a no-go for me next week as well.

Nightwing #24 Preview

I feel like we're on the road to heartbreak city, especially with the Batgirl stuff teasing the return of Dick/Babs romance stuff, which I don't necessarily need in lieu of.

Looking Forward: July 5th, 2017

July is already here, that means the year is half over. Good? Bad? I don't know. The world's on fire. There's still comics coming out though!
  • Batman #26: We see what actually happens in the War of Jokes and Riddles.
  • Nightwing #24: Now for Nightwing vs the C-list.
Sean Murphy's Batman book is being announced on Wired next week too. I'm going to guess maybe we hear more about DC's new format or whatever their doing. (I'm going to guess it's like DKIII and books come out when the fuck ever with better paper stock)

SPOILERS: Detective Comics #959

There's magic, giant robots, fur ball people, demon premonitions of some sort, and even holographic Tim Drake. This issue has it all!

Looking Forward: June 28th, 2017

Late on this post. When I went to make that graphic the first time, the DPI was something real stupid in Photoshop, so I couldn't see any of the text I typed in my normal font size, so I said "fuck this" and went to do something else... for two days. Whoops?
  • Detective Comics #959: Zatanna!
Maximum effort. Good job, me.

Batman Group September 2017 Solicitations

Biggish Month. Metal apparently double ships? Wonder if anyone told Greg Capullo? We're getting the October solicit too for some reason? Then there's a whole bunch of Metal One-shots starting that month, which I'm not sure how I'm going to cover, as I'm not in the business of giving myself more work here anymore. Though I probably will include the Suicide Squad and Teen Titans issues that crossover with Nightwing. We'll see!

Batwoman #4 Preview

Can confirm that the lady up there knows Kate Kane's name. Spoilers.

All-Star Batman "Ends," gets Reformatted

The language behind All-Star Batman and its status as an on-going, a mini series, or something in between has been muddy at best, all the way from when it was first announced, continuing to today. Recently there was some word that this current arc was the final arc... but there was that long promised Sean Murphy story, and I myself heard there was to be more later, so Snyder came out and said there would be more All-Star and there was some misinterpretations had... but now there won't but, but there still kind of will be. Confused? Great.

So, here's the rundown. All-Star Batman is indeed ending with issue #14 in September. That said, Scott Snyder is still going to be continuing All-Star Batman (name pending, I guess) with the various artists he's lined up to work with including Sean Murphy, Paul Pope, Lee Bermejo and Afua Richardson, but instead of the monthly format, DC is going to publish the book in a prestige format, with a release schedule that hasn't exactly been outlined... I'm going to guess "when they're ready" sort of like Dark Knight III, but hopefully there's some more consistency between issues. With the new format will come bigger issues (dimensions) with better paper quality, and me being a digital reader, all that means dick to me other than "well that's probably how they justify keeping it at $4.99 minimum with no back-up." But what are you going to do?

I'll be interested to hear more about where this goes. SDCC is right around the corner, I bet we'll hear more around then.

Dark Nights: Metal Tie-Ins Coming in September

And this was the last thing I was waiting to be announced, although, the way I heard it way back, it almost seemed like it was going to be like Villains Month or something, which the whole line going heavy metal album cover with armor and shit. I guess what we're getting is a little easier on the wallet.

SO, what are we getting? Starting in September and going through November, various titles including Teen Titans, Nightwing, Suicide Squad, The Flash and more will have special one off issues featuring their characters fending off threats from the Dark Multiverse. Most issues will be written by their usual writers, but will have special guest artists... and all I know is Stejpan Sejic drew that top piece and that's a team book I desperately need.

Also, it's worth noting, Scott Snyder let a few things slip in Metal related interviews. Duke is getting his own book soon, it'll be written by someone new that Snyder either taught or came up through the DC writers program, I forget which. Also, The Outsiders will eventually make their way into Detective Comics at some point. News!

Looking Forward: June 21st, 2017

Jeeze, it feels like I haven't done this in a month.
  • Batman #25: Jokes and Riddles, and engagements. Do it. Just do it.
  • All-Star Batman #11: No idea what the First Ally guy is, curious to find out.
  • Nightwing #23: Nightwing has a habit of teaming up with bad guys, huh.
  • Batwoman #4: End of the first arc.
Solicits are happening too, I have no idea where the month has gone.

Detective Comics #958 Preview

The robot thing in #950 was probably the story I was least excited by, but this arc is getting pretty talked up here and there, so we'll see.

Looking Forward: June 14th, 2017

Metal stuff is starting. Totally snuck up on me.
  • Dark Days: The Forge #1: The Metal preludes were the things that were actually a surprise to me when announced, so curious to see more about them.
  • Detective Comics #958: Is Steph gone? Good. Back to the good shit.
  • Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #11: Sigh... that Oracle is still around.
  • Gotham Academy: Second Semester #10: The end is that much closer.
Also, E3 is next week. Who knows if WB will announce the new Batman game that has been rumored forever in various states. Last that may have leaked out is that a reset button was pushed, so probably not great to get hopes up.

SPOILERS: Batman #24

So there's like one big thing that happens in this issue and I'm sure most everyone knows it already... I've known about it for while because... reasons, so that being said, I can't really offer up much about it, other than very general thoughts towards the action.

SPOILERS: Nightwing #22

Can't have a proper Nightwing book without blockbuster, can we?
